Meet The Graduate/Tae Kwon Do Orange Belt/Carnival Kid

Wow.  What a week.  I am glad none of you can see me because tears are streaming down my face as I write this blog post, as they have been pretty much all week.  Luckily allergy season is in full effect around here so I have something else to blame my puffy eyes on!  :)

My baby is done with preschool.  How can that be?  Three short, fleeting years ago he started out in Miss Molly and Miss Joni's class and now he is graduating with the Stepping Stones class of 2010 and moving on to kindergarten this fall. (he got PM kindergarten by the way, which irks me but I won't go into that here...)  Here he is on  his very first day at Bright Beginnings, September 2007... and then today, on his last day...
First Day at Bright Beginnings- age 2

Last Day of Preschool!- age 5

Let out a CHEEEEEEER!

Max and 14 of his best friends celebrated their final preschool days with a graduation ceremony early Wednesday morning.  Caps, check!  Gowns, check!  Proud smiles, check!  It was so cute!  Each child made a poster of themselves, covered in pictures from birth till age 5, and all were on display for graduation.  As parents, grandparents, neighbors, friends and loved ones took their seats, the kids marched in behind Miss Debbie and Miss Valerie (whom I will miss greatly!) and sat on the stage.  They all accepted their diplomas from Miss Debbie and were then handed a very generous gift from Miss Valerie- a kids Bible, a wonderful (tear-provoking!) scrapbook from their year together, and a CD full of pictures from the last several months of all the kids in the class.  It was the cutest thing!  Lots of proud parents!  (and as you see... LOTS of pictures taken!)

After school on Wednesday Max had a belt testing ceremony at Tae Kwon Do.  He was moving up from yellow to orange and this was his opportunity to show off his acquired skills.  So proud!  He loves Tae Kwon Do so I'm hoping to continue it for him next fall!  I love that they learn about respect, street safety, car safety, etc.  What a great class for young kids!

Today was the LAST day of school but instead of staying in the classroom, the kids got to enjoy Carnival Day; there were games, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, a bounce house and popsicles all around!  It was what Max was most looking forward to all week!  I had a hard time today. (does anyone wanna read more about my tears?  ha) I tried hard to pay extra attention to our drive into school this morning, knowing it was the last time.  I took a lot of deep breaths as I entered the school with Max; my attempt at "taking it all in".  I talked with his teacher from last year, Miss Heather, and tried really hard to keep the tears back.  Why am I such a boob?  Regardless, Max and his friends had a great time and it was a great kickoff to summer!  I can't believe in a few months I'll be sending my baby to kindergarten on the big yellow bus!!  I better get some 'mellowing meds' ready or something... can you imagine what a wreck I will be for him?  Poor Max! If anyone ever wondered where he got it, now you know!  :)

Sad. Proud. Tiiiiiiiired. (Warning: This is a LONG Post)

We had a pretty emotional weekend at our house.

Yesterday morning I got up and drove over to our old neighborhood to do my run.  As I was ending, I stopped at Kelly's garage sale to say "hey" and check on things when I noticed Chris had come and parked down the street by my car and was walking toward me.  I could tell immediately that something was wrong.  He motioned for me a few times and I went toward him he told me... he and Max had just gotten in the car to make a Donut Haus run and he hit Gary.  Gary!  Max's sweet, loving , easy going "brother".  I could not believe it.  He was dead.  :(  Awful.

Max was in the car when it happened.  After realizing what just happened, Chris jumped out of the car to check to be sure.  He told Max, "put that blanket over your head and don't look over here".  I mean, I'm not sure but I think that in itself sounded pretty traumatizing!  Dang, Chris!  Anyway, he came to meet me so I could continue on with the Donut Haus breakfast and he could come back and clean things up before Max (or I) saw anything too sad or icky or terrible.

Chris sat Max on the hood of his car and told him the news.  Max didn't believe him at first; "For REAAAAAAL, Daddy?".  Then, "can I get a new kitty?"  That was it.  OK!  Off we went to get donuts.  Only that WASN'T it.  On the way home from getting breakfast it set in; Max started SCREAMING.  I'm talking he was in agony over poor, sweet Gary.  (as he should be!)  He couldn't stop.  He cried the whole way home, he cried during breakfast, he cried when Chris showed him where he buried Gary, he cried the entire drive to the humane society.  He even cried in his bed until 11pm for Gary.  We could not console him.

Max at Gary's grave

I will admit, it was sad.  I'm not one of those people who treat their pets like humans or as a big part of the family (don't scold me or look at me that way!), and I certainly never thought I would become attached to a cat!  I've always had dogs!  But Gary was seriously the best pet ever!  He was a stray so he was starved for attention.  He lived outside.  Slept in our garage.  Hung around all the time.  Used the bathroom OUTSIDE. (no litter box to clean, people!)  And LOVED to be held and snuggle.  He will be missed for sure!

Awww... RIP Gary

With no time to waste, we headed to the humane society to get Max a new cat; to hopefully ease his pain a little.  We looked at all the cats and chose about 5 to "get to know better".  Max loved most of them.  I didn't really love any.  None of them were cuddly like Gary.  They were timid and shy and did not want to be held. BOO!  Max thought he had decided on one, Dipper, a tabby.  Problem was, Dipper hadn't been neutered yet and Max was NOT waiting till Monday to get his new cat.  That was too much to ask.  So the search started again, only with spayed and neutered cats.  We found a beautiful black and white short hair that was 6 months old.  She was listed as being very playful, and boy was she!  Max adopted her.  He changed her name from Eclipse to Daisy (from Super Mario Bros.) and we brought her home.

Quick run down on Daisy:  she's a chicken.  Scared of every little sound.  The first day she wouldn't leave the garage!  She didn't even use the bathroom once, nor eat.  Today though, thankfully, she did all of the above and discovered the bug-chasing joys of our covered patio, as well as the cushy couch and nice breeze.  :)  She is home.  And isn't she pretty?

Miss Daisy

Max still misses Gary.  The kicker to all this is that this is "bring your pet to school" month at Max's school.  Each child has had a day assigned to them.  Max is next-to-last and brings his pet this Wednesday.  Go figure.  WHY couldn't he have been assigned to last week?  The sign up sheet says "Gary" but now it'll be "Daisy".  Yikes.  Sad.  I hope he doesn't have to field a lot of questions from his friends that will say "HEY!  That's not Gary!"

The weekend did take a turn for the better at Max's soccer game though!  His best game yet playing up with the big boys.  He got in there and kicked it and hustled and played great defense.  I jumped outta my chair several times cheering.  Yes, I'm going to be one of those embarrassing mommies who gets all crazy and into it.  Whatever.  I get excited, ok?  We were really proud of him and after last week's shenanigans it was refreshing.

Now... we are exhausted.  After riding the emotional roller coaster, getting less than quality sleep, and running around, we need to go to bed early and get ready for the week.  And let me add, if you made it through this entire post and are reading this last sentence, I'm thoroughly impressed and you do not have ADD.  :)  Congrats!

Mother's Day Quotes and Photos

"Mommy, I love you 100... I love Daddy 99..."
"You're my first best friend."
"You're stronger than Daddy, you could beat him up!"
"I LOVE YOU, Mommy"
(@ 7am- entering our room with a roar)  "Happy Mother's Day, Mommy!"
"I like your pink shirt."
"You smell good."
"I looooove your hands."

and I reply:  "I'm so glad God gave you to me!"  to which he says: "Me too, Mommy!"

Music to my ears on Mother's Day!  :)

Design on a Dime, Colleen Edition

We've had our black table in the breakfast nook for about 4 years now... we've tried desperately to keep the hard-to-clean white chair cushions spotless but alas with a child, it's nearly impossible.  We put beach towels down on the chairs for a while, just to catch any spills, cover old stains, etc. but that just became ugly to look at!  So.... last weekend I went to JoAnn's to find new fabric to cover those nasty chairs!

I have been called "creative" throughout my years but when it comes to home improvements, sewing, big projects, etc. I'm just no good.  I wish I were because I have awesome fabric from IKEA that I want to turn into a king-sized duvet for our bed but I just  have no idea where to start.  Covering chairs though, I definitely can do!  Upon searching for fabric I ran into "outdoor" fabric and thought to myself "hey, this is probably a tad more spill resistant that regular fabric" so I began to dig for just the right color and pattern.  I found a cool green and white fabric from Eddie Bauer that I thought would be perfect, called Chris for exact cushion measurements, and snatched it up!!!

A few hours later... Voila!  Newly covered chairs!  Whaddya think? (kinda hard to tell...??)

Rainy, Dreary, Ugly... yet DELIGHTFUL Spring Sing!

Remember this last year?

http://ketchupandgreeniebeanies.blogspot.com/2009/05/i-got-nothin.html

Yup, Max had his Spring Sing program at school Sunday... the first weekend in May, just like last year.  It was at 3pm, just like last year.  The building was crowded and SUPER hot, just like last year.  It was a huge success, UNLIKE last year!  YAY MAX!

Max marched into the school, lined up with his class, followed his teacher and the two other classes who were also performing with them into the church, and got up on that stage and SANG!!!!   He smiled, he clapped, he wiggled... he did it!!  We were so proud!!  It was the last performance of his preschool years, well, besides graduation- but I have a few weeks to mentally prepare for that one. What a bittersweet day...

Here are a few horrible pictures I took... I was waaaaay in the back and used the zoom... not cool.  We also took some video but I cannot get it to upload here... ugh!

It was also time for the school's annual silent auction.  Ok, so Max made me bid and bid and bid on the class stuffed animal (you know, the nasty thing that each kid was responsible for bringing home twice during the year?).  My final bid for the 6 inch tall dirty bunny was $35.  Seriously, if that doesn't win it then that's just dumb!!!  We lost out on Baxter the Bear last year so fingers crossed that Bella the Bunny will be ours...

And now the last month of school begins...
